Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any specific questions not covered in this section please ask so we may address them. Questions may be on any health care field. We believe in our patients making informed choices and decisions.

These are some of the questions we get asked on a regular basis. This will be updated from time to time as more/different questions are asked. This section will primarily be directed toward Chiropractic questions.

What types of services do you provide? up
Here at Back to Wellness, P.C. we provide chiropractic and acupuncture services as well as supplementation.
What insurance do you accept? up
  • Wellmark/Blue Cross Blue Shield PPOs
  • Midlands Choice and its affiliates
  • Accountable Health Plans
  • Medicare and RR Medicare
  • Principal
  • Humana

If you don't see your insurance provider listed here check to make sure that it is not a part of a larger company that is listed. This list may not be complete or up to date. Insurance companies change policies on a very frequent basis. According to all insurance companies it is the responsibility of the patient to know who is and is not covered by their insurance provider for coverage as well as details such as deductible, co-pay, and limit of visits before receiving care. At this time we do not accept any HMO's but we do honor the Wellmark price schedule for Wellmark HMO insurance holders.

I don't have insurance that covers Chiropractic. Do you have a separate set of prices for people like me? up
No. We have only one set of prices. It is illegal (insurance fraud) to have more than one set of prices. However; for people that choose to not have us submit to insurance (for whatever reason including but not limited to not having coverage) and who pay the day of service we are allowed to pass on the savings to you that comes from not needing to do the administrative work of processing insurance claims. This is a percentage discount from our charges that we feel accurately reflects the savings we get from not processing an insurance claim.
Do I need a referral to see a Chiropractor? up
No, a patient does not need referral by an MD before visiting a doctor of chiropractic. Chiropractors are first contact physicians, and are so defined in federal and state regulations. Following a consultation and examination, the doctor of chiropractic will arrive at a diagnosis under chiropractic care, or refer the patient to the appropriate health care provider.
Do you take X-rays? up
We do not. For the reasons why please look here.
How does Chiropractic work? up
The main premise of how chiropractic works is this: The brain controls everything in your body. It does this by sending out signals, through the nerves of your spine, which control every part of your body. It only takes a very small amount of pressure on a nerve (the weight of a dime is enough to cause a 60% reduction) in order to severely hamper the ability of those signals to get to and from where they are going in a quick and concise form. So what does that mean in practical terms? Muscles may be sore or weak, we may have a twitch in a muscle, we may get a headache, or just about any other result you can think of because as we said, the brain controls every part of you. Chiropractic is used to remove some of these pressures on the nerves by adjusting the spinal vertebrae.
Is Chiropractic Safe? up
Yes, very safe. We have devoted a section on this very topic in our Why Chiropractic section.
Will it hurt? up
Generally adjustments do not hurt. We try to be as gentle as we can possibly be. Occasionally if you have a lot of inflammation in an area and/or very tight muscles the adjustment isn't completely painless. If you know you have inflammation before you come in you might want to use an ice pack prior to your appointment in order to reduce the swelling thereby reducing the possibility of some minor pain.
Is getting my neck adjusted dangerous? up
While there is some risk involved with every health care option, the risks of getting hurt from a neck adjustment, when preformed by a trained chiropractor, are very small. The most common concerns people have are stroke and a broken neck. The incidence rate attributed to a stroke being caused by a neck adjustment preformed by a chiropractor is approximately 1 in 5,850,000. The other thing that many people worry about is having their neck broken. Many of these people have seen movies where if the hero breaths on the bad guys too hard their neck breaks. It is almost impossible for a chiropractor to break a person's neck. The amount of force used by a chiropractor is usually between 5 - 10 foot pounds. The force required to break a neck is 1260 foot pounds. Both the risks of stroke and of a broken neck are increased if the neck is twisted violently. None of our neck adjustments here at Back to Wellness, P.C. involve the force required to, or contain the violent twist associated with, injury to a neck.
How soon will I see results? up
This changes from person to person based on how your body responds to treatment. Many of our patients get immediate relief from the pain they are in. For some if can take a couple of days. If you are trying to correct a condition that you have head for several weeks, months, or years keep in mind that while we should be able to reduce or eliminate your pain relatively quickly it will take longer to address the cause of the pain.
Can Chiropractic help headaches? up
Yes it can. Most every type of headache can benefit from chiropractic care. Dr. Jason has had significant results with migraine headache sufferers and the C6 vertebra. For more information on headaches look here.
Can Chiropractic help low back pain? up
Yes it can. Each case is different but in most cases chiropractic care can significantly reduce or eliminate back pain. Low back pain is something that millions of people experience each and every day and chiropractic care has been shown to be one of the best methods available for treating it. For more information on low back pain look here. If you are considering back surgery for disc herniation chiropractic may be an alternative. Some cases cannot be treated in any way but surgery though. Check with both your chiropractor as well as your spinal surgeon to determine if your case can be helped with a more conservative approach.
Can Chiropractic help with my impotency? up
This is a topic that though it rarely comes up we felt should be placed in the FAQ section because of the delicate nature of the topic. This way you can find an answer without having to ask in person. Chiropractic may help with this problem but because of the many causes of this problem we can not say that it will in every case. The way that it may be helpful is as follows. The brain controls everything in your body and sends out the signals of that control through the nerves of your spine. Several nerves that control the reproductive system are located in the lower portion of the spine. IF the cause of your impotency is from a nerve impediment chiropractic care MAY restore normal function. If you know your impotency problem is due to another cause I'm sorry but it is unlikely that we will be able to help you. If you're not sure about the cause of the problem be sure to ask us in person about your specific case. We may be able to help or point you in the right direction of someone who can.
Is there research that supports Chiropractic? up
Yes there is, enough to drown in it seems. For a very small sample of the research on various topics look here.
I've heard some Chiropractors make you wear a gown, do you? up
No. The reason that some do is because they are using a method of locating problem areas in the spine that require them to have direct skin contact. In cases like this the patient is wearing a gown that is much like a shirt with a slit in the back allowing them to access the spine. The methods we use to determine what needs to be adjusted do not require any special gowning. If you choose to get acupuncture you will most likely need to put on a gown. Those will be provided for you. The reason for gowning during acupuncture is so that needles that need to be placed into the skin of your back can be placed without risk of having them pulled at by the cloth. In cases like this you are given a gown to put on in a closed room without windows. When you have the gown on and are ready for the doctor to enter the room just open the door. That is our signal that you are done changing.
How often should I get adjusted? up
There is a lot of dispute on this topic. Please see our views on it here in the visits section.
Once I get adjusted do I have to keep getting adjusted for the rest of my life? up
No, your health is in your own hands and you decide if you want to continue to pursue chiropractic care. The reason many people continue getting care for the rest of their lives is that they see and feel the benefit from receiving care. For more on how we feel about this topic please see our How Often Should I See A Chiropractor section.
